The Mangaung Wastewater Re-Use Project was initiated in 2014. This project is framed by the National Water Security Framework and is located on the Upper Modder River and Caledon River. The project is a water re-use or wastewater reclamation project. It involves recycling wastewater and treating it. Its impact, when rolled out, will be enormous. In Phase 1 alone it will save 45 million litres of water per day.  This is a significant amount as Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) has experienced water restrictions over multiple years and by its own calculations, the city has a current water deficit of 60 million litres of water per day as a result of drought, population growth and an operational deficit over the last 5 years within the Metro.
