The Civic Centre Greening Project is an initiative of the Buffalo City Electricity and Energy Department. This retrofit project is an initial demonstration of the commitment of Buffalo City to energy-efficient buildings. Located in its energy and financial building, Beacon Bay, it is intended that this will be the first of many retrofitting projects involving municipal buildings.

The objectives of the project were to improve energy efficiency and to educate the public on alternative sources of energy. The interventions made to the Electricity and Energy Department building serve as a public education showcase.  Information sharing displays are set up in the lobby of the building. These generate interest and questions from the public. There are also pamphlets and screens in the building to showcase the retrofitting project and its impact.

The main thrusts of the project are to ensure energy efficiency, renewable energy production, energy education as well as to initiate a rural off-grid electricity pilot.
